Iniuria - Hate Beyond Hate

Twee jaar nadat ik kennismaakte met het vaderlandse vijftal, dat onder de banier Iniuria death metal maakt, plofte plots de tweede mcd van de band op de deurmat. Ik weet me nog te herinneren dat het eerste wapenfeit (Lethal Dose) destijds een positieve indruk op me gemaakt had, of dat echter ook met deze tweede plaat het geval is viel nog te bezien. In de twee jaar die er tussen de demo en mcd zitten heeft de band de zanger vervangen, en is het altijd nog maar de vraag of de band de ingezette koers vast houdt.
Maar al bij de eerste luisterbeurt wordt duidelijk dat het recept niet veranderd is. Nog steeds hoor ik geen cello's, sopraanzang, opbouwende keyboardintro's, catchy melodietjes of andere hippe geluiden terug. Nee, de koers is nog steeds lompe, zware 'Grolschdeath' waarbij het kunstprincipe 'less is gore' goed toegepast kan worden.
Wel zijn er kleine veranderingen terug te horen als ik Lethal Dose uit de kast trek. Niet alleen hoor ik natuurlijk dat de vocalen uit een andere gorgelende put komen, maar ook valt te horen dat de muzikanten flinke stappen hebben genomen om volwassener over te komen. Niet alleen is de mix een stuk beter, maar ook aan het gitaarspel valt een flinke ontwikkeling af te horen. Pak hiervoor maar eens het nummer Rebel to the Grave erbij.
Iniuria laat met de vijf korte nummers horen dat ze nog steeds levend en schoppend zijn. Hate Beyond Hate is weer een alleraardigst staaltje death metal voor een nog relatief jonge band. Ik vind het nu echter wel tijd worden voor de band om een stap verder te zetten voor een groter (geciviliseerder) publiek dan alleen die oostelijke boerenprovincies. Het wordt tijd om mensen aan te spreken middels een full-length of een tour in het voorprogramma met een grotere naam. Ik denk dat de band voldoende in huis heeft om dat aan te kunnen.

“Heavy hand-rolling tobacco, whisky, 28 mugs of coffee, three polyps and a twisted mind”. The enclosed YouTube link accordingly, these are the prescribed ingredients to become to a deep roaring voice like this. It might be wise to consult fellow countrymen Erik Mensinga, George Oosthoek, Rikkert Achtereekte or Patrick Savelkoul about how they do it, as they have all proven to be able to perform tons of gigs in a row and keeping their grunting voice in shape in a wiser way. Of course, this is merely what just someone shouts on their behalf. I hope. From the eastern regions of The Netherlands with Singer Ka, not likely to be named after the snake from Jungle Book, from the outer eastern regions. They claim to make death metal the way it is supposed to sound: without keyboards, violent and such. Well, they keep up with that strive. Would one be inclined to ask if Iniuria is a prototype death metal band, there’s no holding back in confirming that. Fast, slow, deep, low, vulgar, uncomplicated and rude. It is all there, from dragging doom-like parts, to raging grind. From blunt axing to more melodic noise. Let’s use de terminology old school for the “so manyth time”. The music is not all that surprising, but that doesn’t make it any bit less fun. And they play tight like an ant’s ass. (that metaphor, by the way, is an assumption).
The first of five track of the demo, ‘Back In ‘Nam’ raises some question marks. The band members not all appear to be older than twenty five, which must imply that the knowledge of this war (1957-1975 I say by heart) is extracted from either a book or a movie, or from The A-Team series. Luckily they added a booklet with lyrics, which tells me about the following: the song is about a veteran who is surrounded by loneliness and is still being haunted by the atrocities he witnessed and experienced in war. In itself that is a fairly good topic for a song and I must admit the success of the attempt. The song itself is a bit unpretentious for a song with a message, but I still want to reward it with a compliment. Title track ‘Hate Beyond Hate’ appears to be about the frustration of a dysfunctional childhood., or something like that. Again, not too bad a level of lyrics.. ‘Parasites Of Society’ deals with junkies. The song is provided with a guest appearance by Michel Matteman, of Carnal Leftovers. Don’t let that be unmentioned. Although their vocals aren’t that different from eachother shockingly, they’re separated by the production as the vocals switch from the left to the right speaker, to emphasize that it’s two different singers. Nice one. ‘Rebel To the Grave’ explores a rather traditional theme for metal: religious antipathy. “So you want to trick me into your religion? I resist in the name of Satan”. That’s a choice you make, as a lyricist, but I think it is slightly harmful to the image that was presented to me earlier. See the interview we did in this edition and find out why it is justified. But hey, there’s one more song left and closer ‘Maze Of Violence’ makes it up somewhat.
All with all this semaphore demo is above average. They have released an earlier demo in 2007, called ‘Lethal Dose’. Colleague Menno observed that Iniuria at that time could not keep up with bands like God Dethroned and Sinister. I, for my part, think it is very unlikely that they ambition to take the crown from the Dutch half gods. Or even level with Sinister. Just make a nice bit of racket with your mates and see if you can pick a few nice gigs in between. The park is full of running people, but most of them don’t do that in order to win the Rotterdam or New York marathon. Iniuria just does what they feel is right. Keep on doing so, I would say.

Inuria is een nieuwkomer van eigen bodem. Sinds de oprichting in 2005 is de koers gezet om death metal te maken zoals zij vinden dat het bedoeld is. Geen overbodige ingrediënten zoals exotische instrumenten, fragiele zangeresjes, keyboardgejengel en samples, maar gewoon een flinke partij beukende herrie aangevuld met een schuurpapieren strot. Na een jaar hadden de heren genoeg materiaal bij elkaar geschreven om een eerste mcd te vullen en zijn ze de studio ingedoken voor de opnames van Lethal Dose, die na de persing plots namens Zwaremetalen op mijn deurmat viel. Aangezien ik altijd wel te porren ben voor herrie van vaderlandse bodem was ik ook blij dit werkje aan een kritische luisterbeurt te mogen onderwerpen.
Met een intro die verdacht veel weg heeft van de intro van Vader's Litany gaat de acht nummers tellende mcd van start. De band doet wat het beloofd heeft en de nummers komen voorbij zonder enige elementen ter gehore te krijgen die onder de naam poespas gecatalogiseerd kunnen worden. Chaotische drumpartijen, zware riffs, een monotone grunt; de muziek voldoet aan alle standaarden van het genre. En zoals ik dat wel vaker vind, deze muziek komt live veel beter tot zijn recht. Ik verwacht dat het in dit geval ook zo zal zijn.
Hoewel Iniuria dus geen originaliteitsprijzen in de wacht zal slepen moet ik wel toegeven dat ze best indruk maken met Lethal Dose, want de muziek is van behoorlijk hoog niveau. Vooral als je ook nog eens bedenkt dat dit pas het eerste wapenfeit is. De band beukt namelijk stevig door en tijdens het luisteren komen namen als Vader en Severe Torture in me op. Muzikaal gezien kan je het ook een beetje tussen deze twee bands in zien. Niet de minste vergelijking, maar met deze start heeft de band best potentie om later in één adem genoemd te worden met deze bands. Mijn advies is dan ook om een mogelijkheid om de band live te zien met beide handen aan te grijpen. Mooie start voor deze jonge band en wellicht een mooie kans voor een label?
